Lee's Summit Autism Support Group held its 2nd Autism Resource Night on October 1st, 2007. The Resource Fair has proven for a second time that it is meeting a need in the community that is not being met by other resources. The attendance included representation from parents of Lee's Summit R7 and from several different school districts outside of Lee's Summit. A welcome change included Lee’s Summit R7 participating at our event this time around.
One of the missions of Lee's Summit Autism Support Group is to collaborate and work with Lee's Summit R7 Schools. We requested that our informative flier be sent home to the 210 families in the school district that are affected by Autism. When we networked with parents and asked them how they learned of the Resource Night, it was mentioned they were pleased that Lee's Summit R7 Schools sent home information about the upcoming Resource Fair. Some of these parents also stated that it would have benefited other families they knew of, if the school district had sent the flier out to families at least 2 weeks in advance. It was noted the informative fliers went out to some families the Friday before the event and in some cases the day of the event. Our group is pleased with Lee's Summit R7 openness now to work with parents of children with Autism and Lee’s Summit Autism Support Group, but this is an example of the kind of work in progress we are facing.
Currently they're about 210 or more families in Lee's Summit R7 Schools with a medical and or educational diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder.
